Understanding Health and Health Care
            1.
The functionalist model is the most favorable sociological perspective that assists in understanding health and health care in the society. The functionalist approach explains that good health and quality medical care is critical to improve the smooth functioning and operations of the society. Based on the model, the patients should their role as sick persons to explain their medical condition and influence normal obligations and responsibilities. The physician-patient relationship is usually hierarchical in nature (Barkan, 2014). The medical physicians should provide relevant instructions and the patients should be able to follow the instructions effectively. The physicians should perform their effective roles including the diagnosis of the patient's medical condition and recommend ways of treating the condition. The input of patients and physicians is critical in improving good health in the society. As a result, the functionalist approach is critical in understanding the concept of health and health care as it emphasizes on the significance of individual's contribution to improve quality health care.
             2.
I think health problems among individuals from low-income backgrounds is largely due to the unhealthy lifestyle practices rather than the lack of access to quality and adequate health care services to the medical conditions. Low-income individuals lives in poor conditions with adverse environments that increases the risks of medical illnesses. The worse living standards include crowded environment and dilapidated housing environment with poor sanitation. Such living environments are bad for good health of people, more so young children. Even though such environments have improved, many people in the U.S still lives in poor neighborhoods that increases risks of medical illnesses and conditions (Barkan, 2014). The inability to gain access to adequate health care could  also increases the prevalence of health conditions, but the adverse living environment and poor social status has a significant impact on causing medical illnesses to the low-income persons.
